Mastering Closet Organization: Time to Clean Out Your Closet

Before we delve into the exciting world of organizing, let's address the elephant in the room: it's time to clean out your closet! As a rule of thumb, if you haven't worn it in over two years or it still has the price tag on it, it's time to go! Embrace the minimalist mantra and bid farewell to items that no longer serve you.

Coordinating Hanging Clothes

Now that you've made room in your closet, let's talk about coordinating hanging clothes. Group similar items together to create a visually pleasing display. Arrange your clothes by color, season, or type for a harmonious look. This simple step makes getting dressed a breeze and adds a touch of elegance to your closet.

Here is a Great Article from InStyle that goes into great depth about how to do this.

Easy DIY Ideas for Organizational Tools

  1. Chic Hooks and Hangers: Upgrade your closet aesthetics by investing in stylish hooks and coordinating hangers. Coordinating these essentials not only keeps your clothes in shape but also adds a decorative touch.

  2. Repurposed Shoe Organizers: Don't limit shoe organizers to footwear. Hang one on the inside of your closet door to store accessories, scarves, or even small handbags. This easy DIY hack maximizes space and keeps everything within reach.

  3. Tension Rods for Scarves: Say goodbye to tangled scarves! Install tension rods horizontally in your closet and loop your scarves through. This not only organizes your collection but also adds a pop of color to your space.

Drawers, Shelving, and Organizers

Effective closet organization goes beyond hanging clothes. Consider incorporating drawers, shelving, and organizers for a well-rounded approach. Closet organization systems are no longer complicated and can easily be done by just about anyone. Way way less expensive then hiring the pros.

  1. Drawer Dividers: Keep your delicates in check with drawer dividers. These nifty tools ensure that your underwear and socks stay neatly separated, making it easier to find what you need. I have several dressers with dividers and others with organizer bins, depends on how well they fit.

  2. Floating Shelves for Accessories: Install floating shelves to showcase your accessories like a boutique display. This not only adds flair to your closet but also makes accessorizing a breeze.

  3. Belt and Tie Organizers: Utilize special organizers for belts and neck ties. These compact tools keep your accessories tangle-free and visible, so you can effortlessly complete your look.

Mastering Closet Organization

1. Embrace the KonMari Method

Marie Kondo's famous method encourages you to keep items that "spark joy." Apply this rule to every piece in your closet for a curated and joyful wardrobe.

2. Create a Capsule Wardrobe

Simplify your life by curating a capsule wardrobe. Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched, saving you time and ensuring a cohesive style.

3. Install Smart Lighting

Brighten up your closet with smart lighting solutions. Even LED strips or battery-operated puck lights can illuminate even the darkest corners, making it easier to find what you need.

4. Double-Duty Furniture

If your closet space allows, consider adding a stylish dresser or ottoman that serves as both storage and seating. It's a practical and aesthetically pleasing addition.

5. Utilize Clear Storage Bins

Opt for clear storage bins to keep items visible and easily accessible. This simple trick eliminates the need to rummage through boxes, saving you time during your daily routine.

6. Seasonal Rotation

Rotate your wardrobe seasonally to keep your closet clutter-free. Store off-season items in labeled bins or vacuum-sealed bags to maximize space. If you have a long bed skirt and the room under your bed, you can use rolling bins. If you do not, then use something that blends in well and is still storage.

7. Coordinate Hangers

Upgrade your hangers to a uniform style and color. This small change instantly elevates the visual appeal of your closet and creates a cohesive look. You can have the classic brown or white wooden hanger or a nice pink or black velvet hanger. Just make sure they all match.

8. Invest in Quality Shoe Racks

If you're a shoe aficionado, invest in sturdy and stylish shoe racks. Display your footwear like a high-end boutique for a touch of luxury in your closet.

9. Label Everything

Take organization to the next level by labeling shelves, drawers, and storage bins. This simple step ensures that everything has its designated place. My favorite all time gadget is this mini labler.

10. Use Decorative Storage Boxes

Add a touch of flair to your closet with decorative storage boxes. These boxes not only keep small items in order but also serve as stylish accessories.

11. Implement a Laundry Hamper

Keep your closet floor clutter-free by incorporating a stylish laundry hamper. Choose one with a lid to maintain a neat and tidy appearance.

12. Display Jewelry Creatively

Transform your jewelry into a visual masterpiece by displaying it creatively. Hang necklaces on hooks or frame a decorative corkboard for a functional and artistic touch.

Mastering closet organization can be a game-changer for your daily routine, and adding a touch of style with unique pieces is key. One of my favorite items to keep handy is my tweed backpack from J&L Tweed. Not only does it add a splash of vibrant Scottish Highlands flair to my wardrobe, but it's also incredibly practical. The colorful leather tassels and sturdy design make it perfect for both casual outings and more formal events. Organizing your wardrobe around a few standout pieces like this can make your closet both functional and stylish, ensuring you always feel put together.

Thank you so much for this, I have been trying to organize my closet for years, even called in the pros, but my small closet is going to cost me over $5000 doing it that way. I am not a DIY person though, that stuff is too much for me, so these containers and ways you organize, I can do that. I love these ideas! Bethany
