I have wanted a fitbit and a smart watch for the longest time and even though they have been on my Christmas list for years, no-one has ever gotten me one. This year I treated myself to the Fossil Gen 4 Smartwatch in a beautiful Rose Gold.
For a few years now, Google’s Wear OS smartwatch platform has mostly been in a rut. While Apple has soared past them making impressive strides with the highly successful Apple Watch. Then came Samsung with their unique line of smartwatches. But the Google OS has had issues with slow software updates and very little hardware advancements.
However, Google addressed these issues with the most recent update to Wear OS that brought some major improvements to the table. I, wanting a truly unique, fun and everyday wearable Google smartwatch have been waiting patiently for a new processor to replace their ancient Snapdragon 2100 chip that has been powering the majority of these smart-watches.
Finally the replacement is here with the Snapdragon 3100, and Fossil’s new rose gold smartwatch and a unique fact that impressed me is that Fossil is one of the first watches running this new advanced chip. The impressive 3100 isn’t the large overhaul that most smartwatch owners have been waiting for, but it claims to provide better battery life with impressive fitness tracking features, both things that Apple and Samsung were ahead of the game in, until now.
Like all the other Wear OS watches, the Sport works well as a tool for notifications, tracking your workout, or asking Google Assistant questions. It has all the features a modern smartwatch should, like GPS, NFC for mobile payments, and my favorite, a heart rate sensor.
Qualcomm’s promises for the Snapdragon 3100, battery life seems to have improved by leaps and bounds. This chip is getting me over 24 hours of usage, I plug it in at night to charge and and it still at 1/4 to 1/2 life when I go to bed at night and start the recharge all over again. For comparison, doing tons of research, both the Apple Watch and the Samsung Galaxy Watch batteries last around the same time between charges. This tells me how much these watches have improved. One of the biggest selling points to me, was the fact that most people can now afford a smartwatch, which has been a huge challenge for so many with these watches. Now they are basically the same price as any decent watch on the market that isn't a smartwatch.
The Fossil Sport is a sports-focused smartwatch, which is one of the reasons I choose it. There are 3 out of 17 Fossil watch-faces dedicated to displaying health data sharing the same space with the date and time. You can track over forty activities, which is super impressive. These include, but are not limited to martial arts, running, tennis, walking, weightlifting, windsurfing, yoga, polo, and even rock climbing. Even though these are also waterproof, you cannot track swimming as of now, but you can download another app for that feature.
As of right now the Fossil Sport cannot track my physical activities, automatically, I had to manually start it when I started my workout. Automatic workout is one of my favorite features of my iphone and was hoping it was on these, but when I looked it up, it is a feature that will be coming out in one of the upcoming updates, so I am super excited for that.
I know I have laid a lot of information on you and I am sure there are things I still have not covered, but I truly love my new watch. Everything I can think I off hand I have mentioned in this review and I am going to buy Izzy one for Christmas, just not the Rose Gold one like the one I just got. She likes more of a sporty type of watch, so I was thinking of a black plain band one. With all the smartwatches out there to choose from, this one is headed in a great direction and for the cost, you just can't beat the features.
